My wife, Mary Jo and I are disaster relief missionaries.  Our mission field is areas that have been hit by a disaster.  We are a non-profit Christian ministry responding to disasters worldwide and are connected to and work with several fellowships, ministries, and individuals around the country who do the same. Tennessee/Georgia Tornado Relief-3

We arrived late in the afternoon on Sunday and made our way to Apison, TN, just outside of Chattanooga.  It is a small town but was in the path of the longest on record of any tornado for how much time it touched ground, almost 28 miles.  This is the same tornado that started in Alabama.  It was traveling about 60 MPH with winds over 200 MPH.  By the time it got here, it was a ½ mile wide.  Needless to say it destroyed everything in its path.  It is only by the Grace of God that many are still alive.  Much of the area hit was rural, but still a lot of damage.  In a 4 mile radius from the church, over 40 people lost their lives.  Many more were injured.

We are doing debris removal, tree cutting and hauling stuff to the roads to be hauled off by the county.  There is so much that we had to rent a bobcat, skid-steer or we just wouldn’t get anything done.

We have grown to 13 as a couple from CA came by our first jobsite and asked if they could help.  They also have an ATV with a hydraulic trailer on the back.  They’ve done a lot of relief work and have been a real blessing to us.  We invited them to stay with us at Apison United Methodist Church.

We’ve been putting in some long days, but everyone has been working hard and being safe!  There is still a lot to do here and it isn’t too late to join us.  We will more than likely be here for about another week and a half.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers and all those affected by these storms.

Thanks for all your prayers and support.

Proclaiming the Lord in all we do,
In season and out of season.

Lord Bless,
Curt & Mary Jo Hencye
