2011 Ministry Wrap-Up

It has been quite a busy year filled with many changes. We traveled a total of twelve different times in the year. We felt the Lord leading us to serve together full time so Mary Jo did not return to teaching this fall and has taken on a larger role in the ministry. I continue to be blessed by the Lord in my custom home audio/video business and when we are home, the Lord always provides work that gets our bills paid! Our schedule and the new roles take a lot out of us but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!

Our son, Nick, just got engaged to Brittany! No date set yet, but we have met her and she seems like a nice girl who loves the Lord. Nick continues to attend Calvary Chapel Bible College in Murrieta, CA. He is set to graduate this spring and hopes to get a ministry job shortly thereafter. Nick joined us in NYC this Thanksgiving and was given an opportunity to teach one of the chapel services and did a great job!

Our daughter Melissa graduated with high honors from high school in May of this year. She entered UCF in Orlando just a couple credits shy of being a junior as she dual enrolled the last two years of high school. She has become part of “Cru” or Campus Crusade for Christ and will be attending one of their seminars after the first of the year.

We continue to focus on discipleship as we’ve all been called to do. It isn’t easy getting up early after all the hard work the day before and knowing the work load ahead, but we feel the team devotion time with the Lord is the most important time we spend all day long (next to personal time!). It is always exciting to see how lives are affected by the verse-by-verse teaching of the Scriptures. Often, people who have been Christians for a long time are encouraged when they are taught passages of Scripture that they’ve never seen before and then are given practical application of that Scripture. What is even better is to see them live it out during the day as we serve together. Not everyone “gets it” but we know that we are simply called to be faithful to teach the Word. God takes care of the results. One guy from the Bowery worked with us in North Carolina and gave me quite a hassle. He was a good worker, but his attitude was poor and he made sure it rubbed off on everyone around him. Then we went to NYC for Thanksgiving, and after the week was over, he came up to me and said how blessed he was to see all that we did for the Bowery for Thanksgiving. He then said he now understands why we do what we do as he got a chance to see some of it from the outside. He even asked me if there was anything I could do to get some of the other Bowery guys to serve better!

We are so thankful for all of your prayers and financial support! We are so blessed to have you as part of our team! We’ve seen many be drawn to Christ through our feeble service in their time of need. It is awesome to see God working in ways that only He could orchestrate! Many people have told us that they didn’t know what they were going to do or where to turn and then we showed up. We were able to share Jesus and encourage many of them in their faith, and you have been part of that.

We don’t make a habit of asking for money or support, usually just a reminder in our emails that if you want to give you can find the info at the bottom of all our newsletters. God has provided for us in amazing ways that always surprise us and cause us to marvel at His goodness. We do have a need that we felt led to share with you. When we started the ministry several years ago a truck and trailer were donated to us. We were wowed by God! As we continue to follow the Lord, the ministry continues to grow and take us in directions we never imagined. We are quickly realizing that the truck and trailer we currently have are not large enough to enable us to continue in the work He has called us to do. We would like to trade our current truck and trailer in and get a larger version of both. If you feel led by the Lord to help out with this project or any of our other finances, you can find info at the bottom of this newsletter to guide you, or you can simply contact us. Please don’t give to us unless you are led by the Lord and don’t give to us in lieu of your tithes and offerings to your own church. Our heavenly Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills, knows our needs and has promised to supply us with all we need to do all He has called us to do!

We are available to speak at your church, ministry, small group, etc. We love to share what the Lord is doing with the ministry and our lives and I am always looking for places/people where I can teach God’s Word and encourage others. We also would love to help other believers start similar ministries in their churches, so please let us know how we can help in this area. This past year we were able to speak in churches in NY, VA and TN, and Mary Jo shared at a Christmas brunch at our own CCS. We will have a resource table at the Southeast Pastor’s Conference at Merritt Island CC in January, so if you are in the area, please stop by and say hi! We are looking into the possibility of attending a couple more conferences this year and setting up tables if we can obtain permission, so stay tuned!

We pray that you would seek first His kingdom and righteousness so that ALL things will be added unto you. Remember that Jesus is the whole reason that the world takes a pause this time of year; He truly is the “Reason for the Season!” Remember to always make Him a priority in your life. It is so easy to get caught up in the things of this world, but God has promised us far better than anything that this world could even think of offering us!

We wish you and your family a Blessed CHRISTmas and a New Year that is filled with opportunities to serve our King that help to make you more like His Son, Jesus!

Opportunity To Serve At The Bowery

Opportunity To Serve At The Bowery!!

We’d like to invite all of you to serve at the Bowery with us for an extended weekend in February. This offer is limited to the first 20 people that respond. We know many of you have told us that you’d like to serve there sometime but taking a week off of work and/or going Thanksgiving week just doesn’t work out for you.

Here’s your opportunity to serve! Travel to NYC on Thursday, February 9^thto begin serving on Friday the 10^th. Then serve Friday through Monday lunch. We’ll do some group sightseeing on Monday afternoon/evening and will depart the Bowery on Tuesday morning February 14^th. There should also be time to go to some close by places such as Little Italy and Chinatown for some quick goodies each evening after we’ve finished serving!

Most of the serving will be in the kitchen preparing and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and possibly an outreach or two at a park in the city. Typically there are local volunteers that come in for the evening shift. This will NOT BE anything like Thanksgiving week—it should be normal working hours! I also do a lot of maintenance around the building and will more than likely need some help in that area as well. Also there is a city wide outreach called Don't Walk By on Saturday night that we will be participating in.

Cost of this trip will be whatever it costs you to travel to/from NYC and $150. The $150 will cover expenses to stay and eat at the Bowery, etc. So yes, this trip includes staying and eating all meals at the Bowery from Thursday evening until Tuesday morning! Any extra expenses you wish to incur such as sightseeing expenses, eating out etc, will be your responsibility, so yes, bring some spending money.

Bedding and towels are provided so you’ll just need your clothes, personal items, toiletries, etc.

Please let us know as soon as possible whether or not you can join us as February is right around the corner and we want to get the team info put together soon! Deadline to sign up is December 31st so don't wait! Feel free to contact us with any questions via email or phone.

Apison, TN Disaster Relief Urgent Needs

Call for Help in Apison, Tennessee

We are quickly coming to the end of our time here in Apison, and it feels as if we have barely scratched the surface. This small community suffered a lot and continues to suffer from the devastating tornados that swept through the area last spring. The community pushes on, yet it is evident that many have been deeply affected by all that has happened. We have truly been blessed to be part of the recovery process. The Lord has done a great work here, and our prayer is that the hope that only the Lord can give will continue to draw others to Him.

While some residents have had to deal with simpler repairs --yard clean up and small home repair—that have allowed them to get back into their homes right away, many others are still without homes or are unable to get back into their existing homes because the houses are in need of major repairs.

At this point there are no more volunteer teams scheduled to come into the area! There is still a lot of work to be done, and there will continue to be for some time. Some grant money is available through a local charity organization, and there is the possibility for even more. If this money is used to hire contractors and purchase supplies, it will quickly be exhausted, but it could go a lot further if volunteers would continue to come in and give their time and efforts. While some jobs do require construction-specific skills, there are plenty of tasks that do not require specific skills. In addition, there are individuals here who are willing to direct those who don’t know as much as others.

Please pray about volunteering your time and talents to the people of Apison. It will be greatly appreciated and you will receive a blessing greater than the one you are trying to give! Please contact us if you need more information, or if you need help putting a team together or in leading a team. We will be happy to help you in any way we can. We might even consider making a return trip to oversee more work and provide tools. Housing, showers and a kitchen are available. No more waiting-it is time for action. God has something here for you to do!!

Tennessee/North Carolina LTR Relief Trip

Tennessee/North Carolina LTR Relief Trip

Lord willing, Mary Jo, Brian “The Tool Man Brodil”, Saul (correctly spelled Sawl) and I will be taking Relief Ministries back on the road for about a month beginning October 8th. We will be traveling back to Apison, TN where we will be helping with the ongoing tornado relief efforts there. We will once again be blessed to stay at Apison United Methodist Church and will be serving with local volunteers as we did a couple of months ago. It sounds as if most of the work will involve the rebuilding process, as many of the residents can’t afford to purchase materials and pay someone to do the labor. There are also some trees that still need to be cut and removed. The community is very excited that we are returning! Jim and Martha, two servants from CA that joined us the last time we were there, have just left the area from their second trip, having done the same and we heard great reports from all they did there.

We will be in Apison for about three weeks. From there we will head back to Jacksonville, NC, where we recently helped with Hurricane Irene relief. There may still be some cleanup work to be done and we will also be doing some general maintenance and light construction at Calvary Chapel Jacksonville, the church that so lovingly took us in when we were there a few weeks ago. We want to bless them with our service and spend some more time ministering to those in the area, especially the men and women who so sacrificially serve our nation in the Marines and Navy.
After that, we will be home for a little less than two weeks and then it’s off to NYC for the Annual Bowery Thanksgiving Outreach. We will take a team of fifteen in to help prepare and serve over 12,000 meals in one week!

Several people have expressed interest in joining our relief efforts in the past but haven’t been able to leave their families, ministries, and/or employers at such short notice. We already have several people who have told us that they will be joining us in Tennessee while we are there and we are looking for more servants! If you are interested in helping out in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us as soon as you can.

We arrived safely back from North Carolina and finally got everything posted on our website and youtube. It was a Jesus-directed and Jesus-filled trip! We really had a good time and were blessed in many ways.

Saul, a leader at the Barnabas House in Sarasota gave his testimony at Calvary Chapel Jacksonville one of the nights we attended. I encourage you to listen to it. The audio is pretty low so you’ll need to crank your speakers/headset up and make sure there is no background noise, but it will be worth it! Just a quick note to let you know that things are going good. We have a small team but everyone is working well together and working hard! We've been working about 10 hours a day! We've just been joined by Bob from Sarasota. He attended our disaster relief training back in the spring and signed up for our email newsletters. He heard of our response and drove up to help us! He was a huge boost today!

The Bowery should be sending a team by Friday and we'll be rocking even more then! We've had some local help, some ladies from CC Jacksonville and some of their kids joined us on Monday and we expect them to come again while we're here when the have time. Also, one of the Navy bosses attends the church and he came out on Sunday to see what we were all about and join in the fun! He offered to send some of the Navy guys as they were available and we've had some extra help the past two afternoons!

We've gotten a lot of work done even though we don't have a large crew. We are also having to cut the trees into smaller pieces and carry them to the street as we decided not to spend the money to rent a Bobcat this time.

We've been posting some photos on our new facebook, just search Calvary Relief and friend us so you can keep up. We also posted some videos on our youtube page, ReliefMinistriesCC. Take a look when you get a chance!

The minstry that's been going on has been awesome. God has really opened some doors for us to share Him with others. One man said he wanted to talk to me about that book I kept shoving at him. I was trying to remember when we talked about the Bible and couldn't think of a single time then realized it was our lives that were speaking to him! His name is Sticks, so keep him in your prayers along with the rest of us and them!

Hurricane Irene 3-Arrived Safely And Getting To Work!!

Just a quick note to let you know we are safe and sound. We landed at 1 AM Friday night/Saturday morning in Wilmington, NC, a coastal town in the south part of the state. We were able to help one family cut some hanging branches and there were some power outages but for the most part things weren't bad there. We stayed with a pastor and his family, Mel, from CC Wilmington.

This morning we took off for Jacksonville, NC, about 60 miles north of Wilmington, on the coast. This is home to Camp Le Juene and where the eye appeared to come through. We attended church at CC Jacksonville this morning, are getting lunch and already have work lined up. At this point it looks like there is plenty of work to do so we will be setting up here until and if the Lord leads us on.

Our first job is to take down a huge oak tree that is lying across the road. It landed away from the home instead of into it. A retired marine from 1976 and his wife live in the home. He is on oxygen and she has shingles and fighting cancer. They have no electricity so we will set up a generator and then get busy on his trees.

If anyone wants to come and join us, please contact me immediately. Please continue to pray for us and all involved. We'll try to stay in touch as much as possible but will be busy about the Lord's work!!

It's after midnight and we've been going at it since 5:30 this morning with devos at the Barnabas House (which I am truly blessed to be part of). More and more guys come to study each time we get a chance to share God's Word. It was standing room only in the small house this morning and these guys are really hungry for the Word! Keep them in your prayers!

Saul, the house captain where we have devos on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, has decided to go with us to help out with Irene's aftermath. He helped us get things ready and all loaded up. I just dropped him off for some sleep before we head out tommorow morning. I still have one small service call to do in the morning and a quick trip to Lowe's and Sam's Club. I'll then pick up Saul and our good friend Brian, who is finally feeling well enough to join us as we head to NC to be ready to get in and help those affected by the storm as soon as possible. We have a couple of options of where to spend the time waiting and will determine where we go based on how the storm is progressing. We want to stay out of harm's way!

We've already been in touch with a few different pastors in areas that may be hit by Irene and they will be keeping in touch with us so that we can best assess how to help when the time comes.

We will be looking for people to join in the efforts and can use anyone with any skill set or not! Just come with a heart to serve and God will use you beyond your wildest imagination! Please contact us as soon as you can so that we can set things up. We will probably be there for at least two weeks if not longer.

Please pray for those affected by the storm and all of those, like us, who will be going in to help them. Pray that The Lord would be honored and glorified in all we say and do and that lives would be drawn to Him during this time. As usual, we will be having our team devotions twice a day so pray for unity and growth during this time for our team, whoever that may be!

We continue to watch and track Hurricane Irene as it heads towards the east coast of the U.S. where it may make landfall as a level 3 hurricane, the strongest to hit the US in several years!

We are praying about responding and may be heading out by Friday to a safe area in order to get in closer to the projected areas before the storm makes landfall so that we may respond as quickly as possible.

If you are in any of the areas that may be affected and need any assistance prior to the storm, please let us know. If you are interested in being part of our team, please contact us immediately. If you need help after the storm hits, please also contact us. Make sure you have our email and cell phone numbers before the storm in case you can’t get on line after.

August Bowery Trip/Relief Minstries News

We just returned from the Bowery, where Curt did maintenance, installed some cameras, and taught Bible studies and chapel, and MJ taught GED English classes.

When we arrived, the kitchen was unbearably hot. There was something wrong with the exhaust fan and no air was circulating at all. The kitchen staff told us that it was terribly hot all day, but by the afternoon, it would get worse—even if the ovens were off. The Bowery was looking at $4000+ for repairs. Curt did some checking and it turned out that the fan was turning in the wrong direction. Someone had wired the motor in the wrong phase and he simply changed the phase and it started doing the right thing. On top of that, a large attic/gable type fan was broken and the repair company was going to charge $400 to fix it when all it needed was a new fan belt! He also installed a temperature sensor on it so that the fan wouldn’t run unless the temperature reaches a certain degree.

In addition to teaching during chapel times and house devotions, Curt offered a Bible study in the evening to anyone who wished to come. Each night, a few more guys showed up. They all had lots of questions and Curt was able to direct them to the Bible, which has answers for every problem in life. Living in community at the Bowery (or anywhere!) can be challenging. It gives the students frequent opportunities to die to self and to practice doing the Word. Pray that they would be rooted and grounded in the Word so that they can succeed in this challenge, that they would continue to study the Bible together, and that they would allow God to have all of their hearts.

We count it a privilege to be allowed to encourage our brothers in Christ at the Bowery, but it seems like what the Lord is really up to is encouraging us. We have recently decided to take another step toward going full time in disaster relief. MJ will not to return to teaching high school English this year so that she will be able to take on more work of the ministry and be available to travel more with Curt. This will allow us to stay in the field longer when we do respond to an area. At this point, we are self-supported. We know that the Lord is faithful and will continue to provide for us, but of course the flesh part of us wonders how and when! Well, while we were in NY, a church on Staten Island was having a VBS and wanted to give their offering to disaster relief missionaries, but they did not know any. The pastor there called his son, who is the pastor at a church in Manhattan. He did not know any disaster relief missionaries either, but he knew someone who did—Bowery director Tom Basile. Sure enough, Tom knew two who just happened to be in town at that very time! We were invited to New Dorp Baptist Church, where Curt spoke to the children and showed some pictures. They blessed us with the offering and then we hung around afterward for some fellowship. Youth leaders Cathy and Ron, who headed up the VBS, and the rest of New Dorp Baptist are part of a good work and are excited for what the Lord is doing among them. It was a beautiful picture of how God cares for us and “how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity” (Psalm 133:1).

At the VBS, we met Danny, who invited us to attend Horizon Fellowship Brooklyn for Sunday services. We were blessed by a good message about unity, and then even more blessed as the congregation put the message into action by making us feel so welcome. Danny and his wife Daniela are interested in joining us for Thanksgiving at the Bowery.

As the work of the Bowery continues, please pray that the men would have victory over the strongholds in their lives. Radcliffe, a student who has been at the Bowery for about a month, said that when he is inside, he is able to do what is right, but as soon as he goes outside, he gets into trouble. He was one of the men who attended Curt’s evening Bible study. He said that he was very encouraged to hear how the Lord can make permanent changes in his life that will last even after he leaves the Bowery. Another student, Joel, came up to Curt before we left and said in a joking way that he was mad at him. The Bible studies about dying to self had convicted him and he hadn’t been able to sleep the past night because God kept revealing all the areas where he wasn’t dying to self! He now realizes just how selfish his life truly has been and with God’s power he wants to stay focused and allow God to change him permanently from the inside out! Another student, Domingo, who is a new believer, said that he was really challenged in what the Bible had to say about living his life for the Lord, but now he knows that as 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, the Bible has everything he needs to live a Godly life no matter what he is going through. Pray for him as he was having some chest and arm pains when we left and was sent to the hospital. He also quit smoking while we were there.

We are blessed that God allows us to share His Word with these men. Even within the protection of the Bowery, the men struggle. Just this week, a student who has worked with us in past disaster relief trips made some poor choices and left the Bowery. We are heartbroken when this happens. Please pray that the men would turn wholeheartedly to the One who upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry, who sets prisoners free, gives sight to the blind, and lifts up those who are bowed down. Pray also that the Holy Spirit would soften hearts so that the Word that is sown will fall on good soil, grow, and produce a crop that will multiply. It really is a matter of life and death.

NYC Bowery June Trip

We are getting all loaded up to take the truck/trailer to NYC and do a week’s worth of maintenance work at The Bowery Mission. Every time we go up we try to do maintenance along with the other duties we have and never get enough done. It is also hard to do all we want to do with limited tools so we decided to just go in with our tools and spend a week just doing all the stuff that never seems to get done!

I’ll also be doing some chapel services and teaching the house devotions as well as leading our team devotions each day.

Mary Jo will be going with us and will be teaching GED English prep classes during the week.

We will take three days to drive up. We will stop Saturday in Richmond, VA where we will stay with Jason and Amara, our friends from CC Mechanicsville who have responded with us several times. Jason and his friend John will be traveling to NYC with us. We will attend church with them on Sunday and spend some time discussing relief work with all those who are interested and letting them see our truck and trailer. We’ll then head out for NYC and spend a week there and be back to Sarasota in about a week and a half.

We are also putting together two teams to go to NYC to help us at the Bowery for our next two scheduled trips. Please pray about joining us!

The first trip is Aug 1^st8^th; we will be giving Chef Clyde a vacation and taking over for him in the kitchen. We have the volunteer quarters to ourselves and would love to have you join us.

The other trip is for our annual Thanksgiving Extravaganza!! This will require a Saturday, Nov 19^thto Saturday, Nov 26^thcommitment.

Please let us know if you are interested in joining either of our teams; you’ll be blessed being a blessing to others!

Please keep us in your prayers as we head out, serve and then head back home again. Also continue to pray for us as we continue to seek the Lord’s will in ministry, that He would open those doors He wants us to walk through and close those He wants closed and we’d have the wisdom to know the difference and obey!

Apison, TN Tornado Relief Final Thoughts

Our response to Apison, TN went better than expected. We achieved a lot and the Lord gets all the glory!

Ternnessee/Georgia Tornados-3

Tennessee/Georgia Tornados-3

First of all we'd like to say that our prayers are with the folks in Missouri who were hit with the devastating tornado the night before last. Many have already contacted us about heading over there to help these folks. As of now, we will remain in TN through the weekend and will then need to head home. One day soon we’ll be able to remain in the field longer and better help those affected. Please continue to pray for God’s guidance in this area.

Some of you will remember some pictures I attached to my last email. Here is a picture of what was left of the area from the first pictures:

There is still a lot of work to be done and what we will do is only a drop in the bucket for all that is here. We wish we could stay longer, but this is what God has called us to at this time.

Everyone is working hard and we have a really good team. Three of our team members had to go home this weekend and the Bowery team will be leaving in the next day or so. We have two new members joining us from FL, one local, one guy from I believe Illinois and three from Virginia will all be coming in today. They will be a welcome to us! We have also extended our rental on the bobcat which is a huge blessing. Without it we'd probably still be on our first home!

Tennessee/Georgia Tornado Relief-3

We arrived late in the afternoon on Sunday and made our way to Apison, TN, just outside of Chattanooga. It is a small town but was in the path of the longest on record of any tornado for how much time it touched ground, almost 28 miles. This is the same tornado that started in Alabama. It was traveling about 60 MPH with winds over 200 MPH. By the time it got here, it was a ½ mile wide. Needless to say it destroyed everything in its path. It is only by the Grace of God that many are still alive. Much of the area hit was rural, but still a lot of damage. In a 4 mile radius from the church, over 40 people lost their lives. Many more were injured.

We are doing debris removal, tree cutting and hauling stuff to the roads to be hauled off by the county. There is so much that we had to rent a bobcat, skid-steer or we just wouldn’t get anything done.

We have grown to 13 as a couple from CA came by our first jobsite and asked if they could help. They also have an ATV with a hydraulic trailer on the back. They’ve done a lot of relief work and have been a real blessing to us. We invited them to stay with us at Apison United Methodist Church.

We’ve been putting in some long days, but everyone has been working hard and being safe! There is still a lot to do here and it isn’t too late to join us. We will more than likely be here for about another week and a half.

Tennessee Tornado Relief-2

Tennessee Tornado Relief-2

We are just about loaded and ready to roll out of here at about 6:30 tomorrow, Sunday, morning. There will be two guys traveling with me from Sarasota, one from Covenant Life Presbyterian and one from the Barnabas house. A couple from Merritt Island Calvary Chapel will be leaving out of Merritt Island and 5 guys from the Bowery Mission in NYC will also be leaving their homes tomorrow morning. On Wednesday Dan will join us from New Mexico for a week. We will be staying for at least 10 days.

We will all meet at Chattanooga Calvary Chapel in Tennessee where we will journey to Apison, TN, a small town of about 14,000 that was largely destroyed by the tornado that came through it almost 2 weeks ago. Over 40 people were killed from this tornado in what is considered the Chattanooga area where this particular tornado traveled.

We have been blessed to be provided with a church that will let us stay in the town so that we can be close to where we will be ministering.

There is still room for more to help us out in Tennessee. If you are interested in helping in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Please pray for all those families affected by this storm and the others in the area. Please pray for traveling mercies for our group. Please pray for wisdom and guidance once we get to Apison. Please also pray for all of those who have been or will be affected by the flooding that is currently going on from the Mississippi River.

On another note, we just finished up a very rewarding county wide relief preparedness training session yesterday and today. We had almost 70 people attend. The comments we received were very positive. Thanks to all of you who attended and to those who helped us put it on! To the rest of you, where were you!! Hope to see you next year if you live in our area.

One final thing, we are looking for volunteers to join us at the Bowery in NYC August 1-8 to help in the kitchen and with other minor things around the building. If you are interested in joining our team or know someone who is, please let us know.

I maybe able to send out an email or two while I am in Tennessee, if not, I’ll give a full report when I return and I know I still owe a report from last weeks trip to the Bowery with the 8^thgrade class, busy, busy, busy!!

We have just confirmed with Calvary Chapel Chattanooga in Tennessee that we will be joining them in the tornado relief efforts. They have been sending teams out since the tornados hit. We will be going in and helping them in any way we can.

We will be leaving Sarasota this Sunday the 15^th. I have room in my truck to take anyone who wishes to volunteer. We will be driving straight up I-75 from Sarasota, so if you can make it there somewhere in between, I can pick you up. Currently, I have no one to travel with me. The Bowery will be sending five guys down to help from NYC, but I’d really like someone to drive with me so if you are able, please let me know.

We just returned from a trip to the Bowery with the 8^thgrade class from the school in our church. It was a really busy week and we had a lot of fun amidst all of the work that we did. As soon as I get a chance I’ll be doing an overview and posting some pictures and videos. I have a week to get some work done and make some money before heading to TN, so really busy!!

Please continue to pray for the people affected by these storms. There is also a lot of flooding happening around the Mississippi River area, keep those affected by this in your prayers as well. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few!

We’ve been contacted by and have contacted some of our friends in areas that have been hit by the deadly tornados that ripped through several states on Wednesday.

At this point I am unable to respond immediately, but I am tentatively planning on going up as soon as I can break free.

We are looking for anyone who has experience to go up ahead of us and get started on the relief efforts as soon as possible. If you or someone you know can get away, please contact us ASAP. The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few!

If you can help financially with relief efforts, please don't hesitate to contact us as well.

Longboat Key Storm Relief And Etc!!

There has been a lot and continues to be a lot going on with Relief Ministries. Most of you probably didn’t realize that we had over 20 homes damaged by a storm a couple of weeks ago. We were called into action by the Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief and quickly got busy helping the residents clean up the mess. We continue to keep the people of Japan in our prayers as they have suffered three large earthquakes in a month and the radiation problems continue to escalate. We are in contact with Costa Mesa and may join a team from there if the Lord wills. We will keep you posted. We also know of others who are ready to go once they get the green light. Please continue to pray!

There is a group of four men from The Bowery driving to visit with us. They will arrive tonight and stay until Tuesday morning. Please pray that they would have a great time of rest amidst being ministered to and ministering themselves.

This Sunday we will have our first NYC Thanksgiving Bowery Outreach meeting for this coming Thanksgiving. It will be at our church at 11 AM, out back under the sails. If you are at all interested in joining our team you must be present for this meeting. If you have a really good reason why you can’t make the meeting please contact me immediately. I can’t wait to see what God will do in our lives again this year!

The first week in May I will be taking 28 adults and 8^thgraders to The Bowery to minister for a week. Please keep us in your prayers for the last minute preparations as well as that our time there would draw us all closer to God and that in this process He will use us to minister to others, drawing all closer to Him!

I have two more trips planned to The Bowery this summer and have room for more team members on both trips. The first one will be from June 18^th-26^th. This will be a maintenance trip. We will be taking our truck and trailer to NYC and doing a lot of maintenance work around the building.

The second trip will be August 1^st-8^th. Mary Jo and I will once again be running the kitchen while Clyde has a short vacation away. We have all of the volunteer quarters open to us and are looking for a team to go with us to do the volunteer work that week at The Bowery.

Please contact us if you are interested in going on any of the three trips mentioned above.

We also continue our involvement at the Barnabas House here in Sarasota. I have begun a twice a week Bible study on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Please pray for the house, leadership and disciples that God would radically change lives. Please also pray for us and that the Lord would open the doors that He wants opened and close those He wants closed and that our eyes would be open to His will.

Sarasota Storm Relief-2

Just a quick note to let you know how things are going. We left out at 7 this morning and just got home around 8:30. It was a long day, but nothing unusual!

There were over 20 homes damaged that we know of so far. The majority of them are mobile homes and there is a lot of metal laying around as well as other debris. Mostly roof and carport damage with an occasional object through a window.

We responded with some friends from church as well as three guys from the Barnabas House. Everyone worked very hard and the community and authorities were very appreciative of all the work that was accomplished. There is still a lot of work to be done.

If you can help out in any way tomorrow, please call me at 915-9560 or Mary Jo at 374-1607. I will be at our church around 7 AM loading up a few things and plan to be on site at 8 AM.

We could also use some help with lunch for the team and some of the homeowners are without electicity and were eating with us as well.

Sarasota Storm Damage Response-Urgent Need

I just received a phone call and email from Ed McCrane, the EOC Chief of Sarasota County. There are some damaged mobile homes in the Sarasota area that need some tarps and there is some cleanup to do. This is a 55+ community and most of them don't have insurance.

Barnabas House

Barnabas House

God has called us men to be leaders in our families, our communities and our churches. Unfortunately many of us men have shipwrecked our lives and are living for the world and satan rather than for God and being the leaders that He has called us to be. This is one of the greatest disasters that we face today.

We strive to reach out to everyone, everywhere we go, especially while here at home. God has led us to the Barnabas House, a local ministry that houses men whose lives have been shipwrecked.

The Barnabas House is an intense men’s discipleship training program. It is a one step program, Jesus! Only He can permanently change lives once we surrender all to Him! Currently there are over 50 men being discipled at Barnabas House.

We are just beginning a relationship with these men and have been attending their Monday night Bible studies when we are in town. They are currently between meeting places as the ministry that oversees them, God’s Gifts, is in the middle of moving/remodeling the place where they hold their Monday evening devotions.

Tomorrow evening the 27^th, we will be hosting the Bible study at our church, Calvary Chapel, under the sails behind the main church building. We will be serving the Barnabas House guys dinner, then doing some worship and a Bible study. Once the ministry building is complete, we plan on feeding the house at least once a month as it is the only time that all of them have to come together each week and we’d like to break bread with them!

I’d like to personally invite you to attend tomorrow nights Bible study and see what the Lord is doing in these men’s lives as He transforms them into the likeness of His Son, Jesus! We will begin dinner around 7 and will feed the house guys first. If there is anything left over, you are welcome to it, but I wouldn’t plan on it! We’d love to see you there, so what are you waiting for!

A quick note on Japan. We continue to pray for this nation and the figures keep climbing. We are in contact with a couple of ministries and there is a possibility that I will be joining a team in the near future. I will continue to keep you posted via these emails. Please continue to pray!

Japan Earthquake-1

Japanese Earthquake-1

First of all I want to clarify from my last email, the full summary of our Ohio flood relief trip can be found on our website, www.ReliefMinistriesCCSarasota.com, the email was not the summary. You can also find links in the summary to the Wapakoneta, OH Daily News article written about us and a copy of the Dayton, OH Channel 7 news video who interviewed us while in Ohio.

The situation in Japan continues to worsen with more bodies being found, more reported missing and the rise of nuclear issues. There are still many places in Japan that have yet to be reached and the outlook continues to get worse.

I received an email from the FL VOAD that we are members of. It contains an email from the president of Japan’s VOAD and some of the issues that are going on over there.

I thought some of you might want to read what he is seeing and they are doing. Please continue to keep the Japanese people in your prayers and pray for all those who are trying to provide relief to them. Pray that they would turn to the Lord for help and comfort during this huge crisis that continues to worsen. Pray that those God wants to help the people would safely find their way and provide the relief that they need including Jesus.

Here is his email:

Dear my friends and colleagues in the US, China, Iran, Korea, Nepal, New Zealand, and Taiwan.

Thank you very much for keeping your concerns for the Earthquake Japan. I have received so many warm heartful messages from many of you that I have had no time to reply each of you. Could you please accept my apology?

I have worked at a disaster NPO (NVNAD:Nippon Volunteer Network Active in Disaster, located in Nishinomiya city, est. 1995, a small NPO, I am its president). Because it is THE MAJOR disaster, I have never had dinner at home and spent only a few hours at my office at university since I came back to Japan. Now I am in Shinkansen Superexpress train to Niigata (I will tell you why below) via Tokyo where I will talk about disaster volunteer activities through a national TV. While being in (on?) Shinkansen, it is a good (and only) chance for me to write e-mail.

Let me report you what we have done so far. Since you may be able to update some objective issues such as death toll (as of March 18, 5,694), missing (17,607), nuclear plants (very serious situarion) and so on through media in your country in your languages, I would like to share what we (NVNAD) have done since last message and what we will do from now (I would also like to add some possible research agenda for future).

<OVERVIEW>
This is the major disaster, which consists of earthquake plus tsunami plus nuclear damage. It also damaged not only urban areas, but also rural, seashore-fishermen, seashore-oil plant, snowy mountainous villages.

There are many prefectures severely hit by the earthquake/Tsunami: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaragi, and Chiba.
Aomori: Northern end. Eastern towns and villages were severely damaged. There are a few nuclear plants which have, reportedly, no damage.
Iwate: Some villages were completely wiped out. 1905 death and 4276 missing. Hanamaki local airport has recently re-opened.
Miyagi: Sendai is not only its capital city, but also the biggest city in this region, which was severely damaged. Some villages were completely gone. At least 3158 were killed and at least 9819 missing.
Sendai International Airport also received Tsunami and has been closed.
Fukushima: It is like Iwate and Miyagi, but it has the nuclear plants.
Ibaragi: It itself received severe damages, and it is close to the nuclear plants of Fukushima.
Chiba: Narita International Airport is located. Not only metropolitan
area but also rural areas were damaged.

The biggest problem is the nuclear plants in Fukushima. It has almost occupied
media coverage. It is THE emergency of our nation as a whole. However, I think that it is difficult for ordinary people to understand the situation correctly through media because of its invisible influence, technical terms by researchers, complicated explanations, and so on. It is in very serious and dangerous situation, anyway.

According to media (mass and mini), there are many situations we should pay attention to. There was no route to reach the most severly damaged villages (getting better, but only for search and rescue). Also, there is very limited amount of gas in this region, so they can't drive. Even if we brought something, there would be no gas to return. No one knows how many residents survived and where they are...Shelters have little drinkable water, few foods, few blankets, but it was impossible to bring sufficient amount of water/food/blankets to the shelters due to the road damage (sea ports were also damaged, train rails were cut, and airports were closed). There are now 407,066 survivors at shelters. It was reported that one old person died at a shelter because there was no
blanket... However, most survivors can't leave the area partly because many of them lost some members of their family and want to find them. Even if they are dead, they need to have a chance to say good-bye. Then, the nuclear plants were getting worse. Survivors of the area were forced to evacuate to other cities/towns in Fukushima prefecture. As
the nuclear plants became worse and worse, and as conditions of shelters were getting worse, many survivors started to evacuate from their communities, if possible. Many local governments outside of the region declared that they accepted as many survivors as possible. As of yesterday, 15,000 survivors evacuated to other prefectures, including Niigata prefecture which is next to Fukushima.

Some disaster NPOs dispatched advance parties and shared information among other NPOs and people. Of course, they shouldn't and can't go into the nuclear affected areas. According to their information, many NPOs got together and formed nationwide networks at least in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe. Also, as routes to the areas started to re-open, some disaster volunteer centers began to open in each area to receive volunteers and donation goods. So, from now on, many volunteers will join the relief work in many damaged areas, I hope.

According to these pieces of informaiton, the NVNAD has made the following plan for survivors.

＜NVNAD's activity>

(1) In the area
The NVNAD will dispatch an advance team (including me) to Aomori prefecture next week. Aomori was severely damaged but not well covered by media. So, we are not sure what's going on there. Children in Aomori helped kids in Nishinomiya in 1995 Kobe earthquake. We may set up (or join an already established) a volunteer center there and send groups of volunteers from Nishinomiya/Kobe later.

(2) Around the area
Many survivors are moving from Fukushima to Niigata prefecture, which are next to each other. The NVNAD has been helping small villages in Ojiya City, Niigata prefecture since the 2004 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake, and a small village called Kariwa since the 2007 Niigata Chuetsu-Oki earthquake. Ojiya City welcomed more than 600, while Kariwa village welcomed about 200 survivors from Fukushima prefecture. They escaped
from nuclear power plants without any belongings. Ojiya and Kariwa opened shelters for them. As soon as we received this news, the NVNAD decided to help those people at the shelters via Ojiya city and Kariwa Village. Our activity had been called "Relay of Disaster Survivors.”
From Kobe to Niigata." The NVNAD extended this relay this time, "From Kobe, Niigata, to Fukushima". We have already donated underwears, shirts, ladies sanitary goods, and mattress (and whatever a survivor wants to start his/her life at the shelter). We will send volunteers by bus to Niigata. I am now in Shinkansen to Niigata to make this arrangement.

(3) In Nishinomiya
The NVNAD is a small NPO and very limited budget. So, we started to collect cash donation in Nishinomiya city. Since residents in Nishinomiya know how sad it is to experience disaster and how difficult it is to live at shelters, they have kindly donated much. Some people came to donate with tears in their eyes, while others left words for
survivors. Also, many people donated through bank and post office.

It is not a good idea to send donation goods, unless they are perfectly organized. So, the NVNAD, City of Nishinomiya, and Social Welfare Council of Nishinomiya have had a series of meetings and will soon take action. If we agree to collect and send donation goods, the NVNAD will coordinate volunteers for this work, too.

The NVNAD is always "survivor-oriented" and keeps long-term perspective. As for (1) and (2), we will support them for a long time, say, 10 to 20 years. For example, we will support survivors from Fukushima not only in Niigata, but also in Fukushima when they finally come back to their hometown for its revovery. To do so, we will spend cash donation in effective ways - So, cash donation directly to the NVNAD is most welcome at this point of time (In Japan, cash donated to Red Cross and other public administrations will be converged and "donation committee" distributes the total amount to each and every survivor according to his/her damage. Donation to an NPO is different.

<For (future) research>
I am not ready and the situation is not ready for our social science studies, but let me self-brain-storm:

- Many people seem to have little knowledge about nuclear plant. Science communication is a big issue. How can we communicate what a specialist says to lay people? Some people are emotional against anything nuclear because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while others are just indifferent to such a historical, political issue. Some concerns about environmental issue (regardless of supporting nuclear power or not), while others just don't care. How can we develop more effective ways of communication
about science?

- Effects of displacement and resettlement should be practically studied. How can they (we help) keep their original culture, how can they make sense of life, how can we form a new community between old/original residents and newcomers (i.e., survivors)? We, Japan, have similar experience during WWII. Many children were forced to evacuate from city area to avoid US bombers. We can use records and studies of this historical event. Anthropology and development study have accumulated research on this issue. I will follow the survivors in Kariwa/Ojiya for a long time and would like to think about this issue.

- Emotional aspects of disaster: I have experienced that when my shirt shows "Kobe", survivors in disaster area, say, Niigata, cry and say, "I am sorry, but I had no time to help people in Kobe. Nontheless, you come to help me far away from Kobe...(tears and tears)." When survivors of 2004 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake visited Kariwa village after its 2007 earthquake, they had no words with each other, but emotionally understood with each other in tears. There are social and emotional representations of disaster/experiencing disaster. It may be examined by comparing those living in a community experiencing disaster with those people without any disaster experiences in the following items: how they represent/imagine survivors' lives, how they try to help/support survivors, how they perceive other people.

- This earthquake consists of Kobe, Niigata Chuetsu, and Nuclear power. It also consists of urban disaster and rural disaster. When we go to the urban earthquake area, we would examine how lessons from Kobe had been learned. When we go to the rural earthquake area, we would examine how lessons from 2004 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake had been learned. When we visit Tsunami area, we may apply our knowledge of historical tsunami
disasters and recent tsunami in Chili and Indonesia.

- It is time to re-think about modernaization in Japan. Philosophy (not only Western, but Eastern), history, religion, literature, sociology, psychology....numerous perspectives should be taken into account.

- We can re-examine how volunteerism has grown up in Japanese society. Some people try to institutionalize disaster volunteers, others (including NVNAD) try to stay with each individual survivor. The latter group don't care whether it is nationwide or not. In other words, organized volunteer activities versus grass-roots volunteer activities. Which is better for response, for recovery, for preparedness? How can
we make use of both system for survivors?

Ohio Flood Relief-Wrap Up

First and foremost we want to say that our hopes and prayers are with the people of Japan. As you know they experienced the largest earthquake on record for their country. Over 1000 have lost their lives while many more than that are still missing. They continue to have aftershocks and many are living on the streets unable to go to sleep because of them. There is also the fear of the nuclear reactors in the area causing even more issues.

Many have asked us if we are going to Japan. We are always open to where the Lord leads us and at this time we have no plans of going. If anything does change we will let you know including if we hear of a call to help from other agencies.

Please continue to keep the people and the efforts in your prayers. We pray that what satan has meant for evil that God would use for good and that many would come to know Him during this time. Please also pray for the Christians in Japan that they would be used to minister to their own countrymen.

We truly look forward to one day being supported as missionaries in disaster relief so that we can spend more time in the field serving the Lord and less time at home working for a living! Currently all of the money that comes into our ministry, unless otherwise noted, goes directly to cover the ministry expenses such as tools, vehicle maintenance, fuel, etc. Please pray for us in that area as it is often times difficult for me to be patient as we wait on the Lord for His timing! If you or your church would feel led to help support us for our personal living expenses to better enable us to minister to others in disaster hit areas, please contact us and we will direct you in how this can be done. In the mean time, please continue to keep us in your prayers!

Ohio Flood Relief Update

Greetings from Ohio!!

Just a quick note to bring everyone up to speed, we all arrived safely though Mary Jo and I had a few vehicle issues on the way. We were able to find a service center who fixed us up and got us back safely on the road. The Bowery guys came in right after us. We immediately looked at the two homes that had been lined up for us to start in and we were able to set up a commercial dehumidifier and a couple of floor fans to start drying up a basement.

It was cold when we arrived, even snowed the first night. We woke up to a couple of inches on the ground. This didn’t deter us from getting at it and we went to our first home. We quickly got things moving and everyone was getting dirty and having fun!

A couple of guys from Virginia joined us on Sunday evening to begin serving on Monday morning and Chuckles also joined us by noon on Monday but I think we worn him out. He disappeared home Tuesday night, (it was much quieter sleeping here last night and the coffee wasn’t colored water this morning!!). We have a group of four coming in today from Indiana to help as well.

The people in the community have welcomed us and really jumped in to taking care of us. The behind the scenes service has really enabled us to better do the things we came to do! The food has been great and I think I’ve already gained about ten pounds!

Here is a typical day for us so you know better how to pray for us for the different things we are doing:

5:30-wake up, personal devotions
6:30-Team Bible Study-Book of Galatians
7:30-Breakfast
8:00ish-job assignments, tool deployment
8:30-head out to the work sites
12ish-lunch
6:30-dinner
7:30-team Bible Study-Proverb of the day
9:00ish-hang time, homework, movie time, etc

It’s been amazing to see what God is doing in our lives while we are surrendering to God’s will for our lives. The guys are really asking some good questions and finding out what God’s Word has to say for their answers. We don’t care what man says, we want to know what God says about issues in our lives! During the day you can hear the different guys talking about the studies and topics we’ve been discussing; it’s awesome to see how God is working!

On Monday night we were invited to a church mission dinner night. The ladies brought in food from many different nations and fed us to our hearts content. We then got to hear from missionaries in Ghana and how the Holy Spirit was moving through that country and changes that are taking place. It was a great evening. We got back to the school where we are staying around 9:30 and I could see that everyone was full and tired. I went into their room to talk about the next morning and say good night. One of the guys said, “Aren’t we having Bible study tonight?” I replied I’m willing if you guys are but we won’t require it tonight. All but one of the team got out of bed and came down for the study. It was one of the best we’ve had and lasted about an hour and a half! Like I said, God is doing great things!!

Continue to keep us in your prayers, a couple of the guys have gone back and forth not feeling too well, but other than that things are going great and people are seeing first hand what Jesus looks like and more importantly we are all becoming more like Him in our lives!

Just a quick note to let you know that Mary Jo and I are driving the truck, trailer/tools to Ohio. We expect to arrive midday on Saturday. We will be staying in Wapakoneta, just a few minutes from St. Marys. The Bowery boys and Chuck will head out tomorrow to join up with us later in the day.

There is plenty of serving to be done, if you are interested in joining us or tag teaming when we leave, please contact us.

Ohio Flood Relief-1

We’ve been called to go to Ohio and help with the flood relief efforts that are beginning there. Mary Jo and I will be leaving Florida Friday morning and driving the truck and trailer. Eight or nine guys from the Bowery Mission in NYC will be leaving early Saturday morning to arrive on Saturday evening. Our good and faithful side kick, Chuckles (Chuck) who now resides in OH will also be driving down to join us.

We have several homes lined up to begin serving on Sunday morning after devotions. Lord willing we will stay until the following Saturday and head back to be home Sunday evening.

We have room for one more person to ride with us from FL to OH and can pick you up anywhere along the way; we are driving straight up I-75 N.

We are heading to the Wapakoneta area where we will be serving with four local churches. This area is also the place where one of our good friends, Kevin, is from. We will be helping some in his community and the adjoining ones, including the St. Mary area which was heavily hit.

If you are interested in joining us in OH, we will have plenty of room for volunteers as we have two large places for teams to stay. Both have full facilities. Please contact us ASAP if you are interested.

We also have other needs such as supplies and funds. If you feel led by the Lord please contact us as well.

Most importantly keep all of us and all those affected by the floods in your prayers. Pray that all of us on the team would grow closer to the Lord. Pray then as we become more like Jesus and become His hands and feet that our lives would draw others to the Author and Perfector of our faith and that eternity would be forever changed!

Bowery February Visit(s)/Upcoming Relief/Response Training

Bowery Visit(s)/Relief/Response Training, Etc!!

Greetings and Grace and Peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ! We pray you are having a good winter and staying warm and dry! Things are going good for us here as we have quickly gotten busy in the new year.

The Sarasota County COAD has asked us to once again hold disaster relief/response training. We will be doing this in conjunction with several ministries, agencies including some local and state government participation. It will consist of breakout groups for different relief/response disciplines. We did a couple of trainings like this a couple of years ago and they went really well. Please save the dates for Friday evening and all day Saturday, May 13^thand 14^th. Details to follow!!

As we continue to help those in need, especially in relation to discipleship, we continue to look for what the Lord would have us do. We have started to get involved in a local ministry called Barnabas House. It is a discipleship training home for men who are looking for help from the Lord to turn their lives around. It is a little different than the Bowery that we work with in NYC, but the focus on God and His Word as being the only thing that can truly change a person, is the same. Please keep them in your prayers and for the Lord to open doors of ministry for us to them when we are not traveling.

We also are continuing our relationship with The Bowery in NYC, once again helping others with the “disasters” in their lives! Mary Jo, Melissa, our friend Gina and I traveled to the Bowery last week while the head chef vacationed at our home. Along with kitchen duties, Mary Jo helped some of the men with English GED prep classes and I kept busy with a lot of maintenance projects.

The Bowery staff has asked me to return again for a week and I’ll be heading out again on Thursday on the heels of Clyde returning to his chef’s duties! They’d like me to help with more maintenance. We’ve got nothing pressing for disaster relief and work is slow so off I go!

We continue to press on in our relief ministry and have become members of the Florida VOAD. We will be helping plan for disaster relief/recovery at the state level now as well as in our county. There are always meetings and trainings to attend, including an upcoming Florida Chaplaincy training we’ll be attending in March, Lord willing. We’ve been able to purchase a few new pieces of equipment recently that will help us in our relief/recovery efforts.

There is still much to do in Haiti and we are praying about a return trip to help with a couple of ministries. Patrick and Barb are doing great. Barb has written a book about their experiences in Haiti, including the earthquake. If you are interested in purchasing a copy let us know.

Merry CHRISTmas and a Blessed New Year!!

Just wanted to take a minute to wish you all the best this special time of year. What other thing has happened in history where the whole world takes a break to celebrate!! Christ is the King and He is coming back again. We pray that you are ready for His return and are as anxious to see it as we are!

This has been a good year for us and we can't express enough how much we appreciate your prayers and support. God has blessed us in many ways. Our son Nick went to Peru for Bible College and he has returned for winter break a changed young man who is becoming more and more grounded in the Word. He is going to Bible College in California next semester so hopefully my friends out there will help give him hard time for me!

Our daughter is dual enrolled as a senior in High School and a freshman in college. She is all set to go to UCF this coming fall and in her mind I think she's already there!

We wish we could spend Christmas with each and every one of you, but know you are in our thoughts and prayers!

Merry CHRISTmas and continue to keep Jesus the reason for the season as well as the reason for all else you do in the coming year!

Pray For Haiti

I've received a couple of emails from friends in Haiti. One talks about the major unrest and rioting in Port-au-Prince (PAP) and the other involves getting a shipment through customs. As Seige states, this is a huge spiritual battle, we need to pray!

Hi Friends everywhere,

As most of you know already 2010 just added one more trouble for the country
before leaving: Elections Turmoil. It started with a quake, then a storm,
then a cholera outbreak, and now the crowd is destroying what is left
standing.

If you are watching the news, I hope you are convinced by now that what is
going on in Haiti is not "NORMAL", the problem is absolutely SPIRITUAL.

As we speak, building are being burned, one bridge was almost brought down
last night in Petion-Ville but the Police intervened to prevent it. Life
just stopped in Haiti: no cars on the streets right now just the crowd
taking control and burning tires and else.

John 10:10The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to
destroy. I have come so that they might have life, and that they might have
it more abundantly.

Please continue to remember us in prayers. I know it is easy to just forget
about Haiti for it looks like a lost cause but don't. Prayers are what we
mostly need at this time.

The other email I received was from Tim Wylie of Parakletos International a disaster relief ministry from CC Costa Mesa. They have been working in Jacmel since the quake and have shipped a bunch of building supplies, vehicles, etc to Haiti. The customs port was closed and the mayor agreed to get it open and get their things through. They need a high tide to unload the ship and expect one at 10 PM tonite. Cholera is also causing issues in Jacmel and some have died. Pray that all would go well in getting their supplies off of the ship and to Jacmel. One of the projects is a water purification system.

Back From NYC Thanksgiving Outreach

We’ve made it back safe and sound from NYC and I’ve finally had the time to sit down and get my final thoughts on paper and some of the pictures and videos posted. Its Christmas time again and don’t forget to say Merry Christmas to everyone you see! Remember that Jesus is the Reason for the Season!

While we were very fortunate that none of the major storms came our way this year, there were still a lot of disasters in different parts of the country and the world. Remember to keep those affected by them in your prayers.

There is still a lot of stuff going on in Haiti. Patrick once again preached an awesome message in church this week. We’ll be seeing what we can do to continue to support their work in Haiti, especially with the rebuilding of some homes after the first of the year. Give us a shout if you are interested in helping out in any way.

Hurricane Tomas Slams Haiti

As we wake up this morning, Tomas has again returned to hurricane strength and is pounding into Haiti with some of the storm bands going over the DR and even towards Puerto Rico as it heads towards Cuba. It is expected to remain a hurricane as it slowly moves north, remaining over Haiti for most of the day.

Authorities and relief agencies worked hard to warn the people, but most of them had no place to retreat to. Heavy winds and rain will be producing mudslides and flooding in many areas.

Please, please, please keep the people in your prayers today and onwards. Pray for all the relief workers who are already pushed to the limits and even the fresh new faces. Pray that in all of this that everyone would turn to Jesus who alone can help them and give them peace as well as eternal life with Him!

Tomas Heads To Haiti

All but one of the computer models shows Tomas running right through Haiti before the end of the week. Currently it has been downgraded to a tropical depression but forecasters are predicting it will strengthen to a level 1 hurricane Friday just before it makes landfall.

There are thousands of people living in the streets, tents, broken homes, etc still from January's earthquake. Please pray that if it is God's will the storm would veer off shore and do minimal damage in Haiti or wherever it hits. Pray that people would continue to be drawn to the Lord through the storms in their lives, whether it is tropical or not.

We will do our best to keep in contact with our missionaries there. Patrick and Barb are currently in Canada, ministering there. We will keep you informed as we receive any information. Remember also that we are working on building some homes in Haiti after the first of the year. Please help us in providing the necessary finances and personnel to accomplish this task.

There has also been a huge outbreak of cholera in Haiti. Many have already died and many more are very sick. Pray that the medical help that is needed will arrive and that those going to help will be protected. If you have an interest in helping out medically with the cholera outbreak, please let us know and we will get you in contact with groups that are helping.

As many of you remember, after the earthquake, we immediately hooked up with CC Port-Au-Prince and helped them minister to their church body, orphanage and their community. Eric from one of their supporting churches returned from Haiti and gave us a newsletter of the current status of the church and orphanage. You can find a link to the newsletter on our website for the next week or so.

Less than a month away from

NYC Thanksgiving Outreach!

Just one more month and our team will be in NYC preparing about 10,000 home cooked meals! The Lord has put a great team together. We began meeting back in July and since have been preparing and serving fellowship dinners at our church.

There are a couple of things that you can do to help us out!

PRAY-we need your prayers
Pies-we have worked out a program with Troyer’s Dutch Heritage Restaurant in Sarasota. We are selling pie certificates for $10, from which we receive a portion. You take the certificate and trade it for most of their world famous homemade pies! You have until the end of May, 2011 to redeem your certificates, so buy them now and stock up for Thanksgiving, Christmas and every other week from now until then! Everyone loves pie! Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing certificates.
Fellowship Dinners-We have one more month of fellowship dinners. Our team prepares a home cooked meal including drinks and dessert. They will be held from 5-6 PM on November 3^rdand 17^th. Dinners are at Calvary Chapel Sarasota, 3800 27^thParkway, Sarasota, 34235. Cost of the dinner is $5. The food and supplies for the dinner have been graciously provided for. This means that 100% of the proceeds will go directly to funding the NYC Thanksgiving Outreach!

Relief Homes For Haiti

I received an email/letter from Patrick and Barb Lataillade, our missionaries in Haiti with Living Word Ministries To Haitians, concerning home rebuilding in Haiti. I am copying their letter below.

We continue to keep our eyes on the tropics. The Lord has certainly blessed us so far this year, but it isn't over yet so continue to pray! Currently there is a large storm, but a low level of anticipation of anything major becoming of it in the next 48 hours. It is sitting near the islands of DR/Haiti, so keep that in your prayers.

We are also working on our NYC Bowery Mission Thanksgiving Feeding trip where we will prepare about 10,000 meals in 5 days!

Now here's the letter:

Relief Homes for Haiti

After the earthquake in January 2010, the Haitian homeless population has multiplied. Currently one million people- approximately one-sixth of Haiti’s population is homeless, living in refugee camps across Port-au-Prince and beyond.

Although most of these camps lie in the city and it’s outskirts, there are other towns that have been severely damaged as well, in the earthquake, mudslides and hurricanes, leaving people outside Port-au-Prince in desperation as well.

Living Word Ministries has focused primarily on caring for the soul first and aiding in social projects, like education and medical help secondly. But with the rise in the homeless and poor families facing even deeper struggles, LWM has raised social priorities.

A home is someplace safe, a small piece of the world that bring families together. LWM has a new vision of providing homes to Haitian families cost free, using International Relief Homes from Gulf Coast Supply & Mfg. Inc.

GulfCoast Supply has worked in Guatemala and more recently in Haiti. Using steel panels, modular style two-room homes can be shipped in two 1500 pound crates and can be bolted to cement slabs within hours. The homes come complete with insulation, able to withstand a wide range of natural disasters and the crates they are shipped in can be used to build tables, shelves and/or bunk beds. The light weight packaging and easy assemble make International Relief Homes perfect for LWM’s housing project.

Not only is International Relief Homes the perfect package for Haiti, but it’s also the most cost effective, approximately $3,000 US per home, thousands less then other less efficient housing options. LWM’s primary goal is to build the first 12 homes for selected families. After those homes are completed and people trained to put up the houses efficiently, they will move on to build hundreds- with a goal of 1,000 Relief homes, each capable of providing a family of six a safe, clean environment for a suffering family.
LWM is looking for compassionate partners who are willing and able to provide monetary assistance and manpower to aid in the vision of seeing 6,000 of Haiti’s homeless finally sheltered.

LWM cannot reach everyone at once, but through prayer and the help of others who see the needs clearly, we believe we can make a small difference in the lives of families, beginning in south western village areas and broadening out over time.

Storm Watch & Things

We continue to watch the tropics and monitor all activity and pray that the storms continue to push north and east and just die out in the ocean. There has been a lot of rain, wind and tropical weather in many areas, please pray for the people affected by the storms that have already hit.

Currently we are watching Hurricane Earl and Tropical Storm Fiona along with another storm that has the potential for tropical development and they seem to keep coming off of the coast on a regular basis these days.

We have contacted some friends along the east coast to let them know we are ready to roll should the need arise. If you are in an area that is affected by a storm, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll do all we can to help out as led by the Lord.

If a storm does come and you are interested in helping out in the efforts, please contact us as well.

We are also in the midst of preparing for the NYC/Bowery Mission Thanksgiving Outreach. We will once again help prepare over 5,000 Thanksgiving Meals to help feed the less fortunate in NYC during Thanksgiving week. Our team has been formed, plans have been made, and we are in the midst of raising funds for the trip. If you are interested in helping with the financial needs of the trip, please contact us via the info below.

One final note, our 19, soon to be 20, year old son, Nick, has decided to enter Bible College and is in Lima, Peru at CCBC Lima! He left last Thursday and started classes this Monday. Please keep him in your prayers and that he would empty himself of himself and look to the Lord to fill him up and lead and guide him for the rest of his days on this earth!

Haiti Home Construction Project-1

Mary Jo and I are currently at The Bowery in NYC helping cook and work on the kitchen as it is being outfitted with a lot of new equipment that was graciously donated! We are also working on this year's Thanksgiving Outreach where The Bowery will prepare and serve around 5,000 meals! Please keep all of this in your prayers!

Now on to Haiti! First of all we'd like to thank all of you for your continued prayer as the details have been worked through for the Haiti Home Construction project. We appreciate your patience as through much prayer and divine appointments, a plan has been conceived and things are ready to move forward.

Below is a copy of the email that Barb Lataillade sent out to us today, please read it carefully:

Update on construction project for Haiti:

At present there are 12 houses (2 room village houses) that need to be built. We are looking for willing helping hands to come bless the ones whose homes were damaged or destroyed. The cost per house is $5,000. All materials will be purchased in Haiti. The houses will be cement blocks and tin roof.

We would appreciate it if your team could raise the funds for a house.

If your church is interested to help, but cannot send a team, let us know. There are those who would like to come, but cannot afford it.
We regret this is short notice, but Patrick is in Haiti now, and has just received the "blue-print" and the cost of materials.

Requirements:
1)Teams of 4-6
2) Each team must have some experienced masons. (if you don't have any, let us know, God will provide the right people!)
3) $5000 for a house (the money is needed a couple weeks before your arrival, so the materials are on site and ready for you
4) We would love this project to start in September.
5) The other expense for the team is: plane tickets, $80 per person ($40 per night) for a guest house, (first night in Port au Prince and last night before departure), and $200 for meals for a team of 6 per week.
6) Bring your own snacks, toiletries, and towel.

Teams will stay in one of the safe, Calvary Chapel church compounds where they will be well taken care of! If you have any interest in helping with the cost of this project, please contact us at Relief Ministries. If you have teams or people who would like to travel to Haiti, do the same. Maybe you can't get all or any of the money, or all or any of the people, but if we all work together, we can form both prayer and financially supported teams that can make a difference in Haiti. Remember, Patrick and Barb are long time Haitian missionaries and have planted 5 churches in the areas where these homes will be built and we have a long standing relationship with them. This project will help open doors for God to work in lives with plenty of opportunity for the local Christian body to follow up with salvation and discipleship!

If you, your church or organization, or anyone you know is interested in disaster preparation/relief/recovery, come join this training. Whether you are already involved in disaster relief or you just want more information, this training is for you!

Several local, state and national agencies will be participating in this training. They will give you an overview of and insight into what they do before, during and after a disaster strikes. They will provide you with what you as a volunteer can do in conjunction with their agency and then give you more information to get you started. There are opportunities for people of all ages to get involved with the disaster relief process. Information tables will also be set up so that you can converse one on one with someone from the specific agencies.

Lunch and some drinks/snacks will be provided.

Hurricane Season Is Here-Training Anyone?

There has been a lot going on since my last e-newsletter. We continue to work on the “Homes for Haiti” project with Patrick & Barb Latiallade. Patrick and Agape are currently back in Haiti as I write this letter. Continue to keep them, the ministry and the country of Haiti and all the relief/recovery efforts in your prayers and that God would get all the glory!

We are less than two weeks away from our disaster relief training. If you are going to be attending this event, we need to get the final count for food by the end of the week. Please respond today! Over 14 relief ministries/agencies will be participating in the training. What are you waiting for!!

Yesterday began what “experts” are claiming could be the worst tropical storm/hurricane season in history. We know that God is in charge and won’t let anything happen to us that He doesn’t know we can stand up under, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be prepared. One of the ways to get more prepared would be to attend our upcoming training session. The Pacific has already had its first named storm, Agatha, which has left close to 200 people dead and one of the worst rainstorms in over a half a decade! GET PREPARED!!

Continue to pray for those affected by the tornadoes and flooding from this spring as well as the earthquake and volcano eruptions of earlier this year. There is a lot going on and as the Bible tells us, it will only continue to get worse. Don’t grow weary in doing good, heaven is closer than we think and our rewards are waiting for us there! Press on, continue to serve and honor God in all you say & do!.
